What to Expect

Formerly operating out of a facility in Glens Falls, New York, and catering primarily to Broadway and regional theatrical productions, Adirondack Studios (also known as Adirondack Scenic) now occupies a 125,000-square-foot building in Argyle. The larger, improved space includes studios for design, carpentry, and metal fabrication, painting, electrics, soft goods, and project management. The company’s specialty is set construction, scenic art, and props, but the operation has expanded to meet the needs of a growing list of clients. Along with touring Broadway productions and live entertainment events, Adirondack Studios also serves museums, theme parks, hotels, and educational institutions. In 2010, Adirondack Asia was formed to support the company’s contribution of sets, props, and special effects to the build of the Revenge of the Mummy attraction at Universal Studios Singapore. The company also began 2011 by opening a new shop in Lake Hamilton, Florida.

Adirondack Studios employs full-time and freelance artists and technicians who specialize in scenic art, carpentry, lighting, rigging, sculpting, and related fields. Vacancies are not regularly listed on the company’s website, so to inquire about job opportunities, you’ll have to pick up the phone and job-hunt the old-fashioned way. For artistic and technical positions, a college degree in your area of expertise is recommended, but not a standard requirement. Professional experience commensurate to the desired level of employment is required, and you can expect a portfolio review as part of the application process. Business-related roles within the company include project management, sales, marketing, development, and finance.

Before you start planning your future at Adirondack Studios in New York, you should take time to consider the location. Just northwest of the company’s former home in Glens Falls, Argyle is a rural area in the mountains, surrounded by small towns. There are few places in the Northeast more naturally beautiful than the Adirondack mountains, but this is nothing like living in Manhattan or Long Island. Those who crave 24-hour restaurants and a lively night scene might go stir-crazy in this neck of the woods, where most stores and restaurants close by 7 p.m. However, if you want a slower pace of life in a quiet part of the Empire State, then by all means, head upstate.
