What to Expect

The famed Avatar Studios are located in the Midtown West area of New York City, otherwise known as Hell’s Kitchen. In addition to recording and mixing albums for artists like Paul McCartney, Run DMC, and Lady Gaga, Avatar has contributed to The Hunger Games soundtrack, 30 Rock, Finding Nemo, and The Sopranos.

The 33,000-square-foot facility is comprised of eight studios, including rooms dedicated to mastering, mixing, and a writing/composition room. Studio A, the centerpiece of Avatar, is the largest tracking space on site—it can comfortably accommodate a 70-piece orchestra—and houses the last Neve 8088 console ever built. Previously dedicated solely to recording and mixing, Avatar has expanded its services to allow clients the ease of completing a project from pre-production to the final master, all in one location.

Avatar Studios employs a full-time staff of recording and assistant recording engineers, as well as production assistants and technical maintenance staff. While the company accepts applications from prospective technicians on a rolling basis, Avatar does not consider candidates for junior engineering positions, unless they have completed an internship at the facility. Internships are offered year-round, and candidates may submit their résumés via email. Be warned, interns should not submit recorded demos or other audio samples when applying or interviewing. Applicants are judged based on their knowledge, experience, and attitude. Not only will the staff at Avatar not listen to your CD, they will lose your phone number if you try to shove one in their hands.
