BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.) is a not-for-profit performing rights organization (PRO) that was founded in 1939. The company operates seven offices in New York, Los Angeles, Nashville, Atlanta, Miami, Puerto Rico and London.

What to Expect

BMI’s primary function is to license music on behalf of their member artists and collect the associated fees that are then distributed to the songwriter, composer, or publisher as royalties. Established to create competition in the PRO business, BMI instituted an open-door policy to all genres of music and artists, which had been previously ignored.  Blues, country, jazz, R&B, Latin, gospel, folk and rock & roll, all found their first home at BMI.

The company employs a staff of approximately 700 people, with most positions in the areas of accounting, licensing representation, relations, and analytics. In any area, a bachelor’s degree is expected. Writer-publisher relations directors typically migrate from a record label career in A&R or have three to five years experience within BMI as an executive assistant or other related area. The organization has excellent opportunities for advancement, as promoting from within is common practice.

An internship program is also available for college credit and often leads to a permanent position for those who demonstrate dedication, passion for the music industry and eagerness to learn. Applicants to BMI must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of music, understanding of entertainment business and ability to adapt quickly to changing needs. It isn’t uncommon for a position or entire department to be transferred from one state to another, so flexibility is an asset.
