What to Expect

As a global recorded music company, Sony Music Entertainment operates in more than 40 countries on seven continents. SME headquarters are located in New York City, but additional facilities exist throughout the U.S., including Nashville, Miami, and San Francisco. Employment opportunities within all domestic segments of SME’s operations and labels can be found on the company’s career website. Positions include marketing representative, licensing administrator, clearance coordinator, new media manager, and web developer.

Internships are available across several divisions, including music licensing, A&R administration, creative, marketing, soundtracks, production, and publicity. These programs are open to college students who are actively enrolled at an accredited institution and eligible to receive credit for the internship. These are unpaid positions and require a minimum of 15 hours per week. New York and Nashville offer the greatest quantity of internship opportunities, but positions do exist in additional cities. Entry-level employment is available for college marketing representatives who are recruited to work in their college towns and assist in the street marketing efforts of SME and its labels. College sophomores with coursework in marketing, advertising, music, or public relations are preferred. Coordinator and administrator-level employment requires a bachelor’s degree with a concentration in business administration, music business, or related field. At least one year of relevant work experience is preferred, which can include internships. Mid-level careers demand a bachelor’s degree and at least three years of employment experience in a music company or related entity. All roles require excellent computer and communication skills, and all applicants should demonstrate considerable knowledge of music and the Sony roster of artists.

Sony Music Entertainment is a large corporation with considerable room for advancement, but it is easy to get lost in the crowd. Interns and entry-level employees may find it difficult to move up in the ranks without the help of a manager or supervisor willing to take special interest in your career and mentor your progress. Nevertheless, with at least one year of experience within the Sony family, doors within the music and entertainment industries will open with a boost of name recognition on your résumé. The corporate vibe will vary significantly from one location to the next. A&R and entertainment-side operations typically have a more casual office culture, while finance, marketing, and similar divisions will require the typical office attire. Perks often include tickets to concerts when available, merchandise, CDs, music downloads, and discounts on Sony products across all divisions.
