What to Expect

Major motion picture studios like Warner Bros. are cities unto themselves. On the lot employees have access to just about anything they could need during the course of their day, whether they are working 9-to-5 or pulling an all-nighter on a shoot. Facilities include a fitness center, day care, commissary, and the First Entertainment Credit Union, founded by Warner studio employees in 1967. Other employee enrichment services include mentoring programs; Lunch ’n’ Learn seminars, organized to encourage continuing education in the business and craft of film and television production; and talk-backs with industry professionals. Of course, free movie screenings and first looks at television series are standard perks of the job.

The production facilities on the Warner lot are massive and the support services are extensive; there are specialty shops for costuming, props, special effects, and post-production, and the Mill Store can supply filmmakers with anything from lumber to markers. The studio employs full-time staff in each of these crafts (and others), which stay busy year-round to serve the numerous feature films and television projects that set up camp at Warner Bros. The compound includes 35 soundstages and four water tanks, the largest of which can hold more than a million gallons of water. Exploring the exterior locations, you will find the Walton House, with practical interior, and streets made famous by Batman Returns, Friends, and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.

In addition to artists and technicians, the Burbank studio also houses offices for many of Warner Bros. Pictures business departments, including marketing, communications, accounting, and media research. There are numerous entry-level jobs and internships available in every career field, and a common excuse to get on the lot is to take a part-time gig as a courier. The work isn’t glamorous, but it allows you access to nearly every department on property and will let you learn your way around while meeting the people who may help you get the job you really want.
